SUMMARY
Airbnb Connect was developed in response to the 2024 D&AD New Blood brief, which challenges designers to transform digital interactions into meaningful real-life experiences. This concept emphasizes a key social feature of the app, enabling Gen-Z travelers to forge connections and build friendships as they explore new destinations.

Airbnb is a remarkable platform for discovering unique stays, travel experiences, and more, centered around fostering meaningful connections. Our goal is to enhance Airbnb by introducing an innovative social experience seamlessly integrated within the app.
Examining
existing flow
We began by analyzing the current user flow for independently discovering and booking trips. While the process is relatively straightforward, we identified opportunities to introduce a social element to enhance trip discovery and planning, tailored specifically for Gen Z travelers.
Brainstorming

Using our drafted flow, we explored a variety of designs to make this new discovery experience feel natural, intuitive, and enjoyable for Gen-Z users. Drawing inspiration from social apps like Zenly, Tinder, and Bumble—known for fostering human connections—we infused these insights into our ideation process.

Collaborating closely with Christine, we iterated on various design options and journey flows to refine both the experience and visual elements. We also integrated a range of user feedback from prototype testing, which guided our design choices.

We recognized that to fully realize the Connect concept, we needed more than just a discovery flow—a new profile creation flow was essential. This would enable users to create personalized traveler profiles, making it easier for others to connect with them.

Building on our draft flows, we developed a highly detailed prototype for activity and profile creation, complete with interactions and animations to illustrate the ideal user journey.

We also explored more natural and intuitive navigation methods to enhance the user experience. Features like swiping through cards, tapping to explore options, and panning around the map create a seamless flow, making the journey more engaging and playful.
